Tips for School Valentine's Cards, Gifts and Boxes: When No Food Is Allowed
If your child's school is anything like my child's where allergies are found in almost every classroom, food is banned from being distributed in any way. This includes no candy attached to Valentine's Day cards either for students or teachers. Several of the store bought cards either come with a sucker or some other form of candy. Instead of skipping the treat all together, here are some creative non-candy ideas:
Ask the teacher about needed school supplies: Every year around this time the classroom tends to run low on one or more type of school supply. This is a great opportunity to email the teacher and ask what the class needs. In my daughter's class, it was erasers so we bought Valentine-themed erasers and attached them to each of her Valentine cards.
Ask your child what supplies the teacher may need: If your child is old enough, ask what his or her teacher uses a lot of at their desk. Both my daughters said their teachers were always in need of red pens. So we attached two red pens to each teacher's card.
Make your own card/gift versus buying one: Simple ideas are buying a box of crayons and a coloring book. Roll up a coloring sheet and attach two crayons in lieu of actual Valentine's Day cards. Other ideas include: giving out pencils wrapped in a heart-shaped post-it note written out from your child, small Play-Doh jars with a Valentine's greeting sticker written on the side or cut rectangular bookmarks out of note cards and have your child write a Valentine's note on each one of them.
Valentine's party boxes: My second-grader needs to bring in a box or a bag to hold all of her Valentine's cards this year. We found the easiest method was to use a large cereal box and cover it with kitchen drawer liner. Since drawer liner comes in large rolls, it is super easy to peel and stick it on all sides of the box. Then your child can decorate it however they want.
