Time For Kid Spring Cleaning: Why Not Make Money in the Process

Published on

Does your craft area look like this in your house? This is our basement craft closet after a long winter of indoor arts and crafts and several hours of school projects. Before you get into the busy summer season of vacations, camps and activities, now is a great time for spring cleaning. For motivation and to lessen the expense of new items we need, I like to try and sell what I can and then donate the rest to charity. Here are several sites and places you can sell your kids' items:

Ebay: (kids clothes/shoes) If you have gently used kid clothes or toys, this is a great site to sell it on. While I have never sold something on Ebay, I have bought several things for the kids on it. For example, our oldest daughter wanted Ugg boots for the winter and I found someone selling a gently used pair for a much cheaper price than in the stores.

Swap.com:(kids clothes and toys) Is an online consignment shop that accepts kids clothes and toys. This site makes it extremely easy to sell items since they send you a prepaid shipping label, you send in your items and they send you back a price of what they will give you for your items.

Once Upon A Child: (kids clothes and equipment) This is a consignment shop located near me. If one is not located near you, try looking online or asking friends if there is a consignment store close by. I simply put any clothes we can no longer use in a plastic bin and bring them into the store. You can leave your items there and then they will call you once they've reviewed them and then they will give you a price for your items. If you accept the price, they will give you a check or store credit to shop onsite. They list specific items on their site, but they take clothes, toys and baby equipment. Just a tip to make sure you bring in clothes for that current season. You will end up being to sell more.

Clothes Mentor:(maternity clothes) Are you done being pregnant? Once I was done having children, I gave away some of my clothes, but several were still in good shape and no one else needed anything more. This store takes maternity clothes. When I brought them in, they were very thankful and said not too many people bring in maternity clothes and they are need of these all the time. Check stores nearby you, but chances are, there is a consignment store you can sell your maternity clothes and make some money toward new clothes.

LollyDaisy:(personalized kids items) This site is really unique and much needed. Have you been given a baby gift that has your child's name on it or initials? These items are normally hard to resell or to give to friends since they are personalized. This site lets you sell these items on their site to other parents with your child's same name or initials.

VarageSale:(kids clothes, toys and equipment) This site allows users to sell gently used children items to other people in their local community. They are in 42 states and also in Canada. The company was started by a mom wanting to sell her children's gently-used items so is extremely parent-friendly. Contact is made online with sales done in your local community.

Garage Sales: (kids toys and baby equipment) If you have a lot of items after spring cleaning, a garage sale may be a good way to earn some extra money on your items and a lot easier than having to mail or take larger toys to a consignment shop. If you don't want to have one yourself, see if your community has a garage sale you can join. For example, our neighborhood hosts a garage sale twice a year where they take care of all the advertising.

Church Sales: (kids clothes and toys) Several churches near us advertise yearly spring sales where you can drop of gently used children items and make money on any items sold. Any items not sold, you can choose to donate to the church's charity and will go to good use.

Half Price Books: (children's books, movies and cds) This is a bookstore near us that we buy and sell to all the time. If your children love to read, watch movies and listen to music, this is a great store to sell any unused items. For example, my daughter is into the American Girl books at the moment, but after she reads them a few times, she wants new ones. We bring the old books in to sell and there is an entire library of now "out-of-print" American Girl doll books.

Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago: (children's clothes, toys and equipment) For any items I can not sell, I will donate the rest to a local charity. This is a local charity in the Chicagoland area. It has personal meaning to me since as a child I had epilepsy for two years, but whatever charity you choose, your items will go to families and kids that can use them. Any charity you choose, will give you a receipt and when you file your taxes for next year, you can use this toward a charitable right off. It will help with your taxes and you will help your local community in the process.
