Published on

Whether hanging out to cheer on your favorite college Alma mater, watching "the big game" or simply getting together to watch sports, winter is a great time to catch up with friends and their families.

Usually you and your friends each volunteer to bring something to the event. If you are in charge of the "kid-friendly" food, what do you bring? It's always a challenge to figure out appetizers that won't get the "thumbs down" from either the adults or their children. Here are 10 simple ideas that you can make with your kids that are sure to be crowd pleasers:

1. Guacamole Dip with Chips - Avocados are rich in heart-healthy fats, several key nutrients and are high in fiber. Serve this dip with baked multi-grain pita chips.

2. Veggies with Low-fat Ranch Dip - Kids and adults alike both like to dip. So why not make a light ranch recipe and serve it with baby carrots and other cut of vegetables that are easy to grab even for little hands?

3. Hummus with Pita Chips - Hummus contains carbohydrates that are slow to digest, fiber and protein to help you stay full longer.

4. French Onion Dip With Pretzels - This version of French onion dip is made with a Greek yogurt base so is healthier and lower in fat.

5. Chocolate Almond Butter Dip served with fruit - This dip is made with Greek Yogurt and almond butter. Almond butter is a great substitute for peanut butter since it contains less fat and salt.

6. Skinny Spinach and Artichoke Dip - Serve this dip with baked tortillas. Spinach is high in fiber and loaded with nutrients plus artichokes contain antioxidants.

7. Ants on a Log - Here is a new twist to this timeless recipe using a little whipped cream cheese instead of peanut butter. Chances are one of your guests may have a peanut allergy so it's nice to provide snacks that everyone can enjoy.

8. Chicken Tenders with Creamy Honey Mustard - These tenders are baked not fried for less fat.

9. Turkey-Veggie Meatballs - These meatballs are made with ground turkey for less fat plus have ground up zucchini and carrots, which your crowd will sure to love. Plus the kids won't realize they are eating vegetables!

10. Crisp Mozzarella Sticks - Serving these appetizers with tomato sauce resembles mini pizzas to kids, but are healthier. Plus, a great way to get their calcium in for the day.
